The outdoor unit needs adequate airflow, safe service access and a solid mounting position. It should not be boxed tightly into an enclosed space or placed where hot discharge air immediately recirculates back through the unit.
In Glasgow homes, visual impact, neighbour proximity, vibration and condensate or defrost water also need consideration. A position that is technically convenient but directly beneath a neighbour's bedroom window may be a poor choice.
The pipe route to the indoor unit should be kept practical without allowing convenience to override noise and access. Doherty's Glasgow air-conditioning survey assesses the indoor and outdoor positions together so the final installation works as a system rather than two separately placed components.
