The correct size depends on more than floor area. Room volume, insulation, window size, orientation, roof exposure, number of occupants and heat from equipment all influence cooling and heating demand.
Oversizing is not automatically better. A unit that is much larger than necessary can cycle poorly and may not control comfort as smoothly, while an undersized unit can run hard without achieving the set temperature. Manufacturer selection tools and a room assessment are therefore more useful than choosing solely by a generic square-metre rule.
Doherty's Glasgow air-conditioning service includes room sizing. For a bedroom, quiet operation and airflow direction should be considered at the same time as capacity.
