Answer

Thermostatic radiator valves, or TRVs, are useful because they let individual rooms reduce radiator flow as the room reaches the chosen temperature. This can prevent spare bedrooms or other lightly used rooms being heated as strongly as the main living spaces.

Energy Saving Trust recommends TRVs as part of a well-controlled wet central-heating system alongside a programmer and room thermostat. They are not a cure for every radiator problem, though. A system still needs correct balancing and enough circulation, and the main room thermostat should be positioned and used sensibly.

If you are replacing a boiler in Glasgow, it is a good time to review old radiator valves and controls because the whole system is already being assessed. Doherty includes heating controls and upgrade work within its boiler service.
