A magnetic filter is commonly used to help capture magnetic debris circulating in a central-heating system. That debris can come from corrosion inside radiators and steel components and can contribute to blocked waterways, valve issues and reduced system performance.
A filter is not a substitute for dealing with a badly contaminated system, but it forms part of sensible ongoing protection after cleaning and chemical treatment. The condition of the existing water and radiators should still be assessed when a new boiler is installed.
Doherty's published standard gas boiler packages include a magnetic system filter as part of the installation. That is useful when comparing Glasgow boiler quotations because the protection is already specified rather than appearing later as an optional extra.
